In celebration of Father’s Day, our June Wine of the Month is the Maverick 2012 Rubicon. Not only does this hefty, spicy red pair well with steak, but the winery name also happens to share the moniker of one of our favourite top guns, and the wine name also just happens to be the name of a big wheeled truck (came across this when we tagged the wine on instagram and our instawine pic got lost in a sea of hashtagged man trucks). Steak, fighter pilots, and big trucks. Screams dad, right? Actually, this sounds nothing like my dad, but for the sake of Father’s Day, let’s all continue to stereotype masculinity for just another minute. We promise not to mention ties again.
This red blend is 65% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Cabernet Franc. Here are the tasting notes from Maverick Estate Winery:
“Deep, dark red colour with typical dense, powerful and assertive aromas. Racy red fruit in combination with white pepper and spice. Hint of anise and tobacco leaf adds to the layers of enticing flavors. The palate is captivating, alluring and voluptuous, yet poised with well restrained power, not trying to overstate the weight and extract. Balanced, elegant with long finish. Drink over the next 3-7 years”.
If you haven’t heard of Maverick Estate Winery, don’t feel bad – it’s new, having opened in 2013 – and you’re welcome. If you’re a fan of Burrowing Owl wines, note that Maverick owner and winemaker Bertus Albertyn was previously the winemaker there. Nestled in Oliver (Wine Capital of Canada for good reason!), Maverick Estate is producing award winning wines already. The 2012 Rubicon took home a Gold at the Best of BC Awards, so you’ll be giving your dad the gold star (in the form of wine – even better) that he deserves!
We think the Rubicon 2012 from this small, family run winery is sure to become a favorite in your own family, and Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to make that introduction. Your dad has enough ties already anyway (sorry for breaking our promise).
